Scarlet Sage
Salvia coccinea, commonly known as Scarlet Sage, is a vibrant, fast-growing perennial native to the southeastern United States, Mexico, and Central America. Renowned for its brilliant display, it produces tubular, bright red flowers from spring until the first heavy frost. Its bright green leaves emit a light, herbal fragrance when bruised. Its continuous floral succession make it ideal for adding reliable color to sunny beds and borders.
Grow Guide
- Light: Full Sun to Part Shade (blooms exceptionally well even in afternoon shade)
- Hardiness: USDA Zones 8–10 (grown as an annual in Zones 3–7)
- Size: 2–4 feet tall with a spread of 1–2 feet
- Watering: Medium. Prefers rich, well-draining moist soils, but becomes moderately drought-tolerant once established.
- Best Use: Outstanding for pollinator gardens, cottage borders, containers, and naturalized beds. The nectar-rich, tubular flowers are a top magnet for hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees, while its aromatic foliage helps make it deer and rabbit resistant. It also self-seeds readily to maintain a presence year after year.
