Rose Garden

Plan Your Visit

We welcome visitors to enjoy the garden and are open every day from dawn to dusk.

Since 1990

The Gene Strowd Community Rose Garden, located in the Community Center Park on Estes Drive, has been a Chapel Hill gem since 1990.

The garden features a wide variety of roses and companion plants, arranged around a copper water fountain at its center and intersected by brick walkways. A gazebo in one corner provides shaded seating. In 2024, we began to transition to a more sustainable model which meant replacing many of our roses which could not survive without chemicals.

The Gene Strowd Community Rose Garden is maintained in partnership with the Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Department.

Weathering Chantal

Flood Damage

In July 2025, the floods from Tropical Storm Chantal caused extensive damage in Chapel Hill including to our garden. It may take a while for the garden to fully recover and look the way we want, but we are happy to have you visit and appreciate your patience as our garden grows.

New plantings

Reaching full beauty

Our new roses are naturally disease-resistance and will take a few years to reach their full beauty. We are also adding pollinator-friendly companion plants which will help the roses thrive by supporting beneficial insects.

We welcome visitors to enjoy the garden and are open every day from dawn to dusk. But please do not cut or take any roses or other flowers or plants from the garden so that all may enjoy them!
