Sparrieshoop
The Sparrieshoop Rose is a charming and resilient modern shrub rose, bred by the legendary Reimer Kordes in 1953. Named after the German village where the Kordes nursery is located, it is celebrated for its simple yet elegant semi-double blooms. The flowers are a delicate, pearly pink with a glowing center of buttery-yellow stamens. Known for its vigorous and repeat-flowering nature, Sparrieshoop provides a constant display of soft color and a light, sweet fragrance from early summer until the first frost.
Grow Guide
- Light: Best in Full Sun (6+ hours) to encourage the most prolific blooming and maintain a strong, upright habit. It is a tough variety that can handle exposed, breezy locations better than many other roses.
- Hardiness: Very cold-hardy, thriving in Zones 5a–9b. It is known for its “iron-clad” constitution and excellent resistance to common rose diseases like black spot.
- Spacing & Size: Typically grows as a large, upright shrub reaching 4–8′ tall and 3–5′ wide. If left unpruned in warmer climates, it can even be trained as a short climber. Space plants about 3–5′ apart to allow for its generous spread.
- Watering: Requires moderate watering. Deep soakings once or twice a week at the base are preferred over frequent, light sprinkling. This ensures a deep root system and keeps the foliage dry to prevent fungal issues.
- Best Use: Because of its height and vigorous growth, it is ideal for informal hedging, privacy screens, or the back of a mixed border. Its simple, open flowers are also highly attractive to pollinators like bees and butterflies.
