Altissimo®
The Altissimo Climbing Rose is a striking and sophisticated climber known for its dramatic, blood-red single blooms. Unlike the many-petaled look of traditional roses, Altissimo features large, 5-inch flowers with only 5–7 velvety petals that open wide to reveal a brilliant “boss” of golden-yellow stamens. This French-bred classic is a favorite for those who appreciate a bold, modern look, and its slightly spicy, clove-like fragrance adds a subtle charm to its high-impact appearance.
Grow Guide
- Light: Performs best in Full Sun (6+ hours), which ensures the most vibrant flower color and robust health. However, it is remarkably shade tolerant and can bloom successfully in areas with partial sun or afternoon shade.
- Hardiness: Very reliable and hardy, suitable for Zones 5–11. It is known for its “iron-clad” disease resistance, particularly against black spot and mildew.
- Spacing & Size: A moderate to vigorous climber that typically reaches 8–12′ in height (though it can hit 15′ in ideal conditions) with a spread of 4–8′. Space plants about 5–6′ apart if planting in a row or against a fence.
- Watering: Prefers medium moisture. Provide a deep soaking at the base of the plant once a week (more often in extreme heat), ensuring the soil is well-drained to avoid “wet feet.”
- Best Use: Because of its somewhat rigid, upright canes, it is the perfect choice for pillars, lamp posts, or narrow trellises. It also excels when trained against garden walls and fences, or it can even be pruned heavily to grow as a large, stately shrub.
