New Dawn
The New Dawn Climbing Rose is a legendary American classic, often hailed as the “perfect fairy-tale rose.” Discovered in 1930 as a repeat-blooming sport of ‘Dr. W. Van Fleet,’ it was the first plant ever to be granted a patent in the United States. This vigorous climber is world-renowned for its “shell-pink” or “blush” double blooms that possess a silvery, pearlescent sheen and a sweet, fruity fragrance. In 1997, it was voted the “World’s Favorite Rose” by the World Federation of Rose Societies, a testament to its enduring beauty and iron-clad reliability.
Grow Guide
- Light: While it performs best and offers the highest disease resistance in Full Sun (6+ hours), it is famously shade tolerant and can still bloom well in partial shade or north-facing locations.
- Hardiness: Exceptionally hardy and versatile, thriving in Zones 4–9. It is a robust choice for both Northern gardens and warmer climates.
- Spacing & Size: This is a rampant grower that can reach 10–15′ (sometimes up to 20′ in warm climates) with a spread of 6–10′. Space plants 6–8′ apart to accommodate its vigorous canes and ensure proper airflow.
- Watering: Prefers medium moisture. Water deeply at the base of the plant in the morning to keep the soil evenly moist while ensuring the foliage stays dry to prevent fungal issues.
- Best Use: Its long, flexible canes are perfect for training over large arbors, pergolas, fences, or tall walls. Because it is exceptionally vigorous and thorny, it also makes an effective and beautiful privacy screen or security hedge.
